Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, believes the Ghana national football team can spring a surprise at the 2026 FIFA World Cup if the team prepares thoroughly for the tournament.

The four-time African champions will make their fifth appearance at the Mundial, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Speaking to Graphic Sports, Afriyie expressed confidence that the Black Stars can begin their campaign with victory over Panama but warned that the team must be mentally and psychologically prepared to challenge England.

“I don’t see it as an easy game for us, but if we get our rhythm right and the team is well prepared physically and psychologically, the boys can cause an upset against England,” he said.

As part of their preparations, Ghana will play international friendlies against Austria and Germany later this month, before facing Mexico and Wales in May and June.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
