Prosper Harrison Addo, the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has provided updates on the FA’s quest to have the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system implemented in the Ghana Premier League.

In an interview with TV3, Prosper Harrison Addo said that the GFA is determined to ensure the implementation of the system in the Ghana Premier League.

He elucidated that to adopt the system, the GFA will have to go through certain processes and that progress has been made in that regard.

Prosper Harrison Addo explained that referees in the Ghana Premier League have undergone training on VAR usage.

“We are on the journey to acquiring VAR, but some countries have more financial resources than others, allowing them to progress faster. VAR is not something you can simply purchase; there are several steps involved, including training for referees and VAR technicians. We have been working with FIFA on this process,” Addo explained.

He also mentioned the “VAR Light” system, which will take time. “Since the full VAR system is costly, we are opting for the second option, but our referees have already undergone some level of VAR training,” he told 3sports.

Calls for the implementation of VAR have heightened following recent refereeing decisions that led to mayhem at some match venues in the country.

On February 2, 2025, a supporter of Asante Kotoko, Francis Frimpong alias Nana Pooley, was murdered during a GPL game between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko.

So far, six persons are standing trial for the incident while the main suspect is at large.
