A tragic gas explosion at Oyoko, a suburb of the New Juaben North Municipality in the Eastern Region, has resulted in the death of Asante Rose, a Purchasing and Supply student at Koforidua Technical University (KTU).

The incident, which occurred when Rose reportedly tried to identify a gas leak by lighting a match, also left her younger brother and a female neighbor with severe burns. The two victims are currently receiving critical care at the Eastern Regional Hospital.

Eyewitness Accounts and Emergency Response

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion engulfed the kitchen instantly, causing widespread damage.

“She struck a match, and immediately, there was a loud explosion. The fire spread rapidly, and they couldn’t escape in time,” a neighbor recounted.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) swiftly responded to contain the situation and assist police investigations into the cause of the explosion.

University and Family Reactions

The bereaved family has officially informed the management of Koforidua Technical University about the tragic loss. However, the institution has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

Authorities are urging the public to prioritize safety measures when handling liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at home to prevent similar tragedies.
