The recent clashes in Adoagyiri, which resulted in the death of one Masawudu Issaka on 22 May 2025, have taken a new turn.
Whilst Police investigations point to Zongo rival gangs as responsible for the clashes, Adoagyiri Chiefs refute those claims of the Police and contend that chieftaincy issues are the root causes of the clashes.
Abdul Rashid Iddriss, alias Future, the embattled Zongo youth chief, and Kwabena Ntiamoah, alias Nana Adu Kokor, have been fingered in the incident.
Kwabena Ntiamoah was installed by Okyehene Amoatia Ofori Panin of Akyem Abuakwa State in 2023, in the sprawling business town of Adoagyiri; a town traditionally under the jurisdiction of Okoanadwo Afutu Dompreh, the Ankobea divisional chief of the Akyem Kotoku State.
According to Adoagyiri chiefs, Iddrissi, a pro Akyem Abuakwa leader of a zongo gang spearheaded the attacks against pro Akyem Kotoku Zongo youth who repelled them, leading to the hospitalization and death of one Issaka on 22 May 2025.
The two Akyem States have been at loggerheads over issues of land and jurisdiction and chieftaincy in Adoagyiri, which have contributed to tensions, loss of lives, and properties.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for calm and restraint.
The Police Service has vowed to bring those responsible to justice and prevent future clashes.
The people of Adoagyiri and surrounding communities are still reeling from the shock of the incident, and it may take some time for tensions to ease.
In the meantime, it is essential that the authorities take concrete steps to address the underlying issues that led to the clashes.
This includes resolving the land and chieftaincy disputes that have been simmering for some time.
The battle for the soul of Adoagyiri reached a cresendo in 2023 when Akyem Abuakwa clandestinely installed Kwabena Ntiamoah as rival Akyem Abuakwa in Adoagyiri a stable and peaceful Akyem Kotoku town.
Since then, peace has eluded Adoagyiri and its residents live of fear of their lives.
