In 1986, Tony Oteng-Gyasi was sitting on the kind of career most Ghanaians would have held onto for dear life. Nine years into British Petroleum’s Ghana operation, rising fast through executive marketing roles, with his employers making it clear he was being groomed for the very top of the company. Then he resigned, not because anything had gone wrong, but because he wanted to build something of his own. Nearly four decades later, that decision looks less like a risk and more like the founding moment of one of Ghana’s most consequential industrial careers.
From the Bank of Ghana to the Boardroom
Oteng-Gyasi was born on February 15, 1955, and studied Economics and Law at the University of Ghana, graduating in 1975. His first job was national service at the Research Department of the Bank of Ghana, before he joined British Petroleum’s Ghana operation for nine years, rising through executive marketing roles and picking up a marketing diploma from the UK along the way.
Trading First, Then Building
His first company, Tropical Products Limited, gave him a foothold in trading and manufacturing. In 1997, he took the bigger step: Tropical Cable and Conductor Limited, a wholly Ghanaian-owned cable manufacturer that became the first in the country to earn ISO 9001 certification. In 2007, he built Western Rod & Wire Limited, setting up the only continuous casting and rolling factory for EC Grade Aluminium Rod in West Africa, a plant that now supplies raw material to conductor manufacturers across the region. A Ghanaian factory feeding other countries’ industries, rather than the other way around.
Recognition Built on Substance
The awards followed steady, compounding credibility: the Empretec Star Award in 2000, Marketing Man of the Year in 2005, Manufacturing CEO of the Year in 2018. He has served two terms on the Ghana Stock Exchange Council, chaired the Governing Council of the University of Ghana, Legon, served two terms as President of the Association of Ghana Industries, and sits on the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Finance. In 2022, he received a Papal Knighthood in the Order of St. Gregory the Great. In 2021, he was appointed Board Chair of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
The Man Who Kept Saying the Uncomfortable Thing
What sets him apart is his willingness to publicly diagnose what’s holding Ghanaian manufacturing back, even when it implicates policies of governments he has worked closely with. In a 2023 lecture titled “The Fault, Dear Brutus,” he argued that Ghana’s reward system incentivises traders and importers over local producers, leaving most Ghanaians stuck in low-skill work while wealth concentrates among a narrow elite. More recently, in 2026, he described shifting global trade patterns as a once-in-a-century opportunity for Ghana to pursue self-reliant industrialisation.
What He Represents
Ghana has no shortage of successful traders who built fortunes importing finished goods. It has far fewer people who chose the harder path of building the factories that manufacture things from scratch. Tony Oteng-Gyasi chose that path in 1986 and has spent decades since both building within it and arguing publicly for the policies that would let more Ghanaians follow him. He is not a household name outside business circles, and has never seemed interested in becoming one. What he has built instead speaks for itself.
