Veteran actor Fred Amugi has shared a remarkable story about his first encounter with a young Nana Ama McBrown, revealing how he discovered her hidden talent and knew she was destined for stardom.

Speaking in an interview on Asetena Pa with Akoto Mansa, Amugi recounted how he was part of the cast for a movie in which McBrown was initially working in the costume department.

He explained that he had travelled from Accra to Kumasi for the shoot, only to realise that he had left an important costume back in Accra.

“So I informed the director that I was going back for it. He told me that I should go with McBrown since she could drive, so I wouldn’t drive tired,” he said.

On their way to Accra, Amugi discovered her first surprising skill.

“When we got to around KNUST, we noticed that a taxi had fallen into an open gutter. McBrown calmly told the driver to step out. She got in, and I don’t know how she did it, she manoeuvred the car out of the gutter,” Amugi narrated.

But that was only the beginning as Amugi revealed an even more astonishing fact.

“At age 18, Nana Ama McBrown was able to drive an articulator from Ghana to the Ivory Coast and back.”

“When they returned to the set, the production team realised they needed an actor who could convincingly play a getaway driver for a group of armed robbers in the movie.

“I told the director that we already had someone. He asked who, and I said ‘McBrown.’ He was like, ‘No.’ But I convinced him to give her an audition.

“The moment we tried her out, she blew our minds away, and she got the role,” Amugi recalled.

Seeing her raw talent on set, Amugi told her, “‘With your talent, just one role in Accra and you are gone.’”

His prediction turned out to be true.

Today, Nana Ama McBrown is one of the most recognisable faces on Ghanaian television, with a career spanning movies, adverts, talk shows, and entertainment programmes.
