The Black Stars were without their main skipper, Andre Dede Ayew, for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Dede Ayew has been sidelined from the team since head coach Otto Addo took over in March 2024, signalling a move away from the 34-year-old.

However, in his absence, the team has experienced catastrophic results, coupled with other off-the-field issues that could have been dealt with better in his presence.

It is evident that excluding Dede Ayew from the team has done more harm than good. Despite his age, he could still be valuable to the squad during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Here are four reasons why Dede Ayew must be recalled

    Experience

Dede Ayew is the most experienced Black Stars player. He has seen it all at various levels and could help the team adapt to different situations.

Dede Ayew has been involved in Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers since 2009 and has a wealth of experience dealing with such situations.

    Solves Leadership Crisis

The Black Stars moved past captaincy issues when Dede Ayew took over. He has earned the players’ respect, and the team is assured of a trusted leader with him around.

The current captaincy switches and tension in the camp could have been avoided.

    Unity

Dede Ayew draws maximum respect from the squad. With his exceptional leadership skills, he can play an integral role in fostering unity within the team.

    Playing Active Football Again

Andre Dede Ayew could also contribute on the field, as he still plays active football.

The former Swanea and Olympique Marseille man signed a season-long deal with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre.
