Four people have died after a horrific crash involving a taxi and a four-wheel drive on a major Perth highway early this morning.

Emergency services rushed to Leach Highway, near Perth airport, at about 3.40am on Monday following reports of a head-on collision resulting in a vehicle catching fire.

Police said the Toyota RAV4 was travelling on the wrong side of the highway when it collided with the taxi headed south-west away from the Tonkin Highway and Airport Drive interchange.

The driver of a Toyota RAV4 and the 58-year-old man who was driving a taxi died at the scene.

Two female passengers in the back seat of the taxi, aged 56 and 81, also lost their lives.

Shocking pictures of the crash were shared on social media showing a car engulfed in flames and the other vehicle wrecked.

The highway is closed in both directions between Tonkin Highway and Orrong Road and is expected to remain closed as Major Crash officers investigate.

Major crash investigators are at the scene and have urged anyone who witnessed or has dashcam footage of the crash to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
