Sir Keir Starmer has announced his departure from the House of Commons, stepping down as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras just months after leaving Downing Street. The decision sets the stage for an imminent by-election in central London and marks the final chapter of a turbulent parliamentary career for the former Labour leader.
Shifting Focus to Global Horizons
Reflecting on his departure, Starmer told local media that he had decided over the summer to pivot toward global issues. He noted that the transition felt natural after serving as head of government.
“I think once you’ve been prime minister, it’s important to answer the question: what are you going to do next? Having decided I’m going to concentrate on international affairs, I think it’s right to step down,” Starmer said.
He added that it had been a “huge honour and privilege to represent the best constituency in the country and to have taken over from Frank Dobson, who was such a great constituency MP and a member of the last Labour government.”
Starmer outlined his future professional path, emphasising that his attention would turn outward.
“I will now focus on other things, and that will be international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world,” Starmer stated.
Alongside global policy, he intends to maintain long-standing advocacy work.
“I will also continue, as I have done for a long time now with others, to work on combating violence against women and girls; that is an issue that matters to me hugely. It’s work I started before I became an MP and it’s work I’m keen to continue after I’m an MP. So international affairs on the one hand, and continuing my work on violence against women and girls on the other.”
Local Legacy and Electoral Test
The resignation triggers a high-stakes electoral test for Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who assumed office over the summer after Starmer’s exit. Holborn and St Pancras has long operated as a secure Labour stronghold, with Starmer capturing a substantial majority during the 2024 general election.
Starmer highlighted his domestic achievements within the district since entering parliament in 2015.
“I want to thank all of those I was privileged to work with in the constituency on issues that matter hugely: affordable housing, first-class education and the work we did on knife crime through the Camden youth support, which was really, really important,” he said.
He also acknowledged the backing of grassroots members.
“They have been resolute in their support for me, firstly in becoming an MP and then becoming the leader of the Labour Party and then as prime minister.”
Despite the historical safety of the seat, opposition parties are positioning themselves for an aggressive campaign. The Green Party has signalled interest, with leadership noting that Zack Polanski, a London Assembly member, is considering a bid.
“Zack has always made it clear he would like to be a London MP. London has been his home for over 20 years,” a Green Party spokesperson said.
Other potential challengers include independent left-wing figure Andrew Feinstein, who mounted a prominent campaign against Starmer in the previous election cycle.
Political Fallout and Reactions
The announcement drew sharp rebukes from the Conservative opposition. Conservative Party chair Kevin Hollinrake criticised the sudden reversal from earlier commitments to remain a backbench MP.
“It is fitting that his final act as a member of parliament is yet another U-turn having pledged to stay on,” Hollinrake said. He added that the contest would result in “a costly by-election for taxpayers at a time when Andy Burnham and John Healey are plotting tax rises on hard-working families across the country.”
Conversely, loyalists defended Starmer’s legacy of turning the party’s electoral fortunes around following the 2019 defeat. Former housing secretary Steve Reed remarked that Starmer was leaving Parliament “with his head held high.” Former business secretary Peter Kyle echoed those sentiments, noting, “From the pits of despair after the 2019 hammering to the euphoria of a landslide victory, he led with grit, driven by a love of country.”
Concluding his formal statement, Starmer offered reassurance to his successor and the incumbent administration.
“Whoever is lucky enough to become the Labour candidate will have my full support and backing,g and I will continue to give my full support to the prime minister,” he said.
As Westminster braces for a competitive by-election cycle, the unfolding political landscape reflects both the enduring strength of traditional party strongholds and the persistent volatility characterising contemporary British governance.
