A former English footballer has been arrested by the police in the United Kingdom (UK) on suspicion of attempted rape following a complaint.

The Sun reports that the ex-player was detained at Stansted Airport after being stopped at a passport control point by Border Force guards while attempting to board a flight.

It was reported that the suspect was wanted by police over a non-recent allegation of attempted rape after a complaint was lodged.

An Essex Police spokesperson explained that the player was arrested in connection with suspicion of rape and later granted bail.

Investigations into the case are ongoing as authorities work to establish the facts.

“A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been bailed to a date in late February 2026 while we continue our enquiries,” said an Essex Police spokesperson.

The player, who represented England in the 2010s, cannot be publicly identified for legal reasons at this time.

The Leveson Inquiry into the British media in 2012 stated that arrested suspects should not be named “save in exceptional and clearly identified circumstances.”

This explains the non-disclosure of the ex-Premier League player’s identity.
