Marcus Morris Sr is a former New York Knicks forward

Marcus Morris Sr, a 13-year NBA veteran and former New York Knicks forward, was arrested on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Broward County, Florida, on a felony fraud charge.

The 35-year-old free agent, who last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers in the 2023-24 season, faces allegations of writing a check with insufficient funds, tied to an unpaid casino debt exceeding $1,200, according to his agent, Yony Noy.

The arrest, executed on an out-of-state warrant from Nevada, has sparked controversy, with Morris’ twin brother, former NBA player Markieff Morris, and agent Noy downplaying the incident as an overblown misunderstanding.

Morris, drafted 14th overall by the Houston Rockets in 2011, enjoyed a journeyman career, playing for eight NBA teams, including the Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks, where he averaged a career-high 19.6 points in the 2019-20 season.

A standout at Kansas, where his number 22 jersey is retired, Morris tallied over 9,000 points and 3,500 rebounds across 832 games.

He also appeared as a guest analyst on ESPN’s “First Take” and “Get Up.”

This isn’t Morris’s first legal brush. In 2012, he entered a diversion program after a battery charge in Kansas, and in 2015, he and Markieff were acquitted of aggravated assault.

The current charge, classified as a third-degree felony in Florida, could hand him up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine, though first-time offenders may face probation or financial counselling.

Held without bond due to the out-of-state warrant, Morris awaits an extradition hearing.

His agent and brother insist the public should await the full story, but the arrest casts a shadow over his post-NBA transition.

As the basketball community watches, the resolution of this case could impact Morris’ reputation and future in the sport.
