Former Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Amadu Hamza, has accused former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, of deliberately undermining the presidential campaign of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a situation he claims contributed significantly to the New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 elections.

In a statement on his Facebook page on August 25, 2025, Hamza alleged that Dr Acheampong deliberately withheld farm support items meant for over 800,000 farmers in the northern sector under a World Bank dry-spell intervention programme, thereby weakening Dr Bawumia’s popularity in his stronghold.

Hamza recounted that in 2023, following a severe drought in northern Ghana, the World Bank approved a facility to provide maize and rice to affected farmers.

According to him, although the consignments were expected to arrive in September 2024, less than 5% of the 57 MMDAs in the five northern regions received any items before the general election.

“In the case of Bawku, I can say without equivocation that I did not receive a single bag of rice or maize contrary to what was put out in the public domain,” Hamza stated.

He added that this deliberate sabotage eroded support for Dr Bawumia in critical constituencies and not his tribe, as Bryan has suggested recently.

He further accused Dr Acheampong of using the Bawku crisis politically against the former Vice President, describing such tactics as “reckless and dangerous.”

The former MCE also listed several other reasons he believes dented the NPP’s chances in 2024, including, the controversial attempt to acquire Labadi Beach Hotel, Acheampong’s infamous comment that “we will not hand over power,” which he said angered many Ghanaians and his handling of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election as a former National Security Minister, which he argued became a propaganda tool for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Hamza stressed that the NPP’s electoral defeat should not be blamed on one individual but rather seen as a collective responsibility of the party.

He advised Dr Acheampong and other senior figures in the party to avoid divisive politics and instead work towards party unity as the NPP prepares for the 2028 elections.

“Remember that a battalion of soldiers in a war is aware of one fact: either they win or lose. In this case, we must win in 2028, but to win, we need unity, not division. United we stand, divided we fall. DMB is coming.”
