Isak (L), Tevez (M) and Dembele (R) all attempted to force a move out of their respective clubs Isak (L), Tevez (M) and Dembele (R) all attempted to force a move out of their respective clubs

The battle lines between Alexander Isak and Newcastle United are now firmly drawn. On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, just few hours after the Swedish striker blasted his club on social media, accusing them of “broken promises” and insisting the “relationship can’t continue,” the Magpies fired back with a sharp rebuttal.

In a statement, Newcastle rejected Isak’s claims, stressing that “no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave this summer”.

The club reiterated their stance: Isak remains under contract, they want to keep their best players.

This public standoff is just the latest episode in what has become one of the defining transfer sagas of the summer. Liverpool’s rejected £120 million bid already signaled how high the stakes are, and with the window closing on September 1, 2025, the question remains: will Isak get his wish, or will Newcastle hold their ground?

For fans, the Swede’s declaration feels dramatic, but football has a long history of stars refusing to play, skipping training, or even going on strike to force moves. Isak is simply walking a path many before him have taken.

Famous cases of footballers who refused to play

Ousmane Dembele – Borussia Dortmund (2017)

When Barcelona came calling, Dembele wasn’t interested in Dortmund’s pleas to stay. The Frenchman stopped showing up to training, prompting Dortmund to suspend him.

Within weeks, he got his move to the Camp Nou in a deal worth more than €100 million.

Dimitri Payet – West Ham United (2017)

Payet was West Ham’s talisman, adored by fans, but he suddenly refused to play under Slaven Bilić.

He wanted a return to Marseille and was willing to jeopardise his reputation to get it. Eventually, West Ham gave in, selling him back to Ligue 1 club.

Carlos Tevez – Manchester City (2011)

In one of the most infamous episodes, Tevez refused to come off the bench in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich. His standoff with Roberto Mancini escalated into months of exile before he was slowly reintegrated into the squad.

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Borussia Dortmund (2018)

Like Dembélé, Aubameyang used strikes and disciplinary breaches to engineer a move to Arsenal. Dortmund suspended him until a £56 million deal with the Gunners was finalised.

    5. Raheem Sterling – Liverpool (2015)

Sterling refused to join Liverpool’s pre-season tour amid interest from Manchester City. His strike was short but effective: City swooped in with £49 million, and Sterling left Anfield.

Isak’s social media blast and Newcastle’s defiant response place him firmly in this lineage of transfer rebels. His words signal a clear intention: he no longer sees a future at St James’ Park.

The Magpies, for their part, are playing hardball. Their insistence on “family traditions” and their willingness to welcome him back when “he is ready” suggest they won’t be bullied into a deal unless Liverpool or another suitor pays up.

If no agreement is reached, Isak could face a dilemma familiar to many before him: swallow his pride and reintegrate, or escalate the standoff into outright refusal.

Either way, the striker has ensured that his situation will dominate headlines until deadline day.
