The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Patrick Yaw Boamah has been formally proclaimed the winner of the Okaikwei Central parliamentary seat by the Electoral Commission (EC). This ruling confirmed Boamah’s return to Parliament and came after a court-ordered recount of votes from 31 polling places. He defeated Abdulai Abu Baba Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 19,868 votes, with 21,099 votes. There were 198 ballots rejected out of 40,467 valid votes cast.

Following a court-ordered recollection of votes, the EC also announced Charles Forson of the NPP as the Tema Central constituency’s Member of Parliament-elect. After the High Court ordered the EC to count the results from two polling places that were still open, this decision was made. The recollection sought to shed light on the contentious outcomes, which had been delayed and subject to court challenges. When NDC candidate Ebi Bright insisted on a complete recount of every voting place, tensions increased, and when the EC refused, NDC representatives protested.

The original announcement that had called Ebi Bright the MP-elect was overturned when the memory led to Forson’s triumph. In recent elections, there has been intense political competition in the Tema Central constituency, which was created in 2012 and typically supports the NPP. The NDC intends to contest the results in court, pointing to irregularities during the election process, notwithstanding the EC’s most recent findings. Note: To make sure the vote totals were correct and to address any disagreements or worries regarding the outcomes from specific polling places, the Electoral Commission conducted a final re-collection. Votes from 31 polling places where there were concerns over the initial counts had to be double-checked.
