Follow Your Instincts, Not Just Your Certificates – Nana Ama McBrown Advises Young Women

Ghanaian actress and media personality Nana Ama McBrown has encouraged young people, particularly women, to avoid limiting their ambitions because of academic qualifications.

Addressing participants at the fourth Women of Valour conference in London on March 7, 2026, McBrown shared reflections from her own life to illustrate that success is not always tied to certificates or formal schooling. She told the audience that even without academic credentials, she has built a flourishing career and secured partnerships with about fourteen major brands in Ghana.

For McBrown, personal drive and intuition should carry more weight than the pressure to pursue careers that society considers appropriate for one’s educational background.

“Choose that thing your heart desires, that thing your instincts are pushing you to do. Don’t feel like, ‘I have a certificate, so I can’t be doing an MC job because I’m a PhD holder.’ I have no certificate, but I work with 14 big brands in Ghana. Aside from being on TV for good money, I also earn well from the side. So please, ladies, I beg you, listen to your feelings and stamp it with your instincts,” Nana Ama McBrown stated.

The event took place at the London Hilton on Park Lane and brought together women from varied professional fields for conversations on leadership, resilience, and personal development.

Women of Valour was established by Ghanaian broadcaster Nana Aba Anamoah and has grown into an international initiative that amplifies the voices of women who have overcome personal and social struggles. Through storytelling and dialogue, the platform encourages conversations around courage, healing, and transformation.

This year’s gathering also featured several influential speakers from media, advocacy, and international development circles. One of them was Debora Shanley, a globally recognised campaigner who has spent years raising awareness about childhood sexual abuse.

The 2026 edition combined personal testimonies, panel discussions, and networking sessions, all designed to empower women to face their fears, reclaim their voices, and inspire positive change within their communities.
