Benjamin Azamati and John Mahama

Ghanaian sprinter Benjamin Azamati has called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritize investment in sports, including athletics, to help develop talents.

He advised the next government to invest in all sporting activities and not focus on the renowned ones, as it would impede the progress of the lesser-known sports.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, Azamati indicated that the returns from the investment will benefit the nation financially and improve the economic situation.

“So I think when we put more into the sports, not focusing on just one sport but focusing more, that would do well because there are a whole lot of talents in the country, and so focusing much on just one sport I think is going to hurt the country.

“Prioritizing other people than the rest, I think, wouldn’t do much for the country. So I think trying to invest in the sport is going to really benefit the nation, and I mean, a new government is coming in,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mahama has said that his government will invest in national teams, women’s football, parasports, juvenile teams, and lesser-known sports.
