A Florida woman has been accused of posing as her dead sister to secure a public housing voucher for a rental property in Miami.

Shadaryl Eddie, 28, was arrested in the Oakland Park neighborhood on Thursday on one charge of criminal use of a personal ID and grand theft between $5,000 and $10,000, according to court documents filed in Broward County.

Eddie allegedly obtained a housing voucher using her sister’s birth certificate and Social Security card, presenting it to the property owner on March 12, 2025, an arrest report stated.

The alleged fraud victim reported that four months later, he received a letter from the housing authority claiming he owed $8,357 for Eddie’s property because the voucher was illegally obtained.

Authorities then discovered that the identity was allegedly linked to Eddie’s sister, who died on December 11, 2024, according to the arrest report.

The report added that the alleged victim’s account was credited for the fraudulent payments and that he is ‘out of funds.’

He also allegedly lost rental income and spent funds evicting Eddie, resulting in a total loss of at least $11,000, according to the report.

The arrest report states that Eddie has been living at a different address since her eviction over the summer.

The housing authority is funded by taxpayer dollars. Housing Choice Vouchers, also called Section 8, provide rental assistance to those with disabilities, low-income families and elderly individuals.

An independent landlord owns the units and has an agreement with the housing authority.

Applicants must meet certain income limits and provide a government-issued ID, Social Security card, proof of income, birth certificate and proof of residency to be approved.

If convicted, Eddie could face three years’ imprisonment for criminal use of a personal ID and up to five years for grand theft.

The case has been categorized as a first-degree felony. Eddie was held in Broward County Jail without bail.

She has not yet entered a plea to the charges and does not appear to have retained an attorney. Eddie could not be immediately reached for comment.
