Abedi Ayew Pele, arguably Ghana’s greatest player of all time, celebrates his 60th birthday today, November 5, 2024.

He is the only ‘maestro’ in Ghana’s football history, a nickname bestowed on him due to his immaculate qualities of conducting play through his passing, dribbling, intelligent touches to take out opponents, and above all, his goal-scoring prowess.

Abedi Pele marked an era and climbed the ladder to be recognized as one of the greatest African footballers of all time through his stellar career.

He played for a few notable clubs, including Olympique Marseille, Torino, and Olympique Lyon. However, his qualities and successes put him on the same pedestal as some of the best footballers Africa and the world have ever seen.

The major highlights of his career were his spell with Marseille and the Black Stars, where he achieved the majority of his honours in his 20-year professional career.

African Footballer of The Year

Abedi Pele was the first player to win African Footballer of The Year three times in a row.

He won the award from 1991 to 1993.

FIFA World Best Player

Abedi Pele holds the record as one of the African players to finish in the top ten in FIFA Best Player voting, when he finished 9th in 1992.

BBC African Best Player Award

He was the first player to ever win the BBC African Best Player award in 1992.

FIFA Club 100

Abedi Pele is the only Ghanaian and third African player featured in FIFA Elite Club 100.

The list was compiled by Brazilian great Pele using the criteria “greatest living footballers”. It was released in 2004.

Golden Foot Legend Award

Abedi Pele is the only Ghanaian and African to win the prestigious Golden Foot Legend Award, beating Javier Zanetti, Luis Figo, Ruud Gullit and Rabah Madjer.

Along with tremendous individual achievements, the iconic player has an impressive trophy pile that includes French Ligue 1, UEFA Champions League, AFCON, and the UAE league title.
