The Ghana Football Association (GFA) held a crucial meeting on Thursday, February 6, 2025, with representatives of the 18 Ghana Premier League (GPL) clubs.

The discussions focused on key safety measures and important decisions aimed at shaping the future of Ghana football.

This meeting followed a violent brawl that broke out during a match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

The incident tragically escalated, leading to the death of Francis Frimpong, a devoted Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan.

Here are the five takeaways from the meeting.

Condemning acts of hooliganism and violence

Before the meeting, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak issued a joint statement, urging the GFA to implement security reforms at match venues.

However, this did not stop the rest of the GPL clubs from also strongly condemning violence and misconduct at stadiums.

    Commitment to promoting fair play

All parties committed to upholding fair play and sportsmanship in the league, ensuring that football is played in the right spirit.

They believe that fostering a culture of respect will help prevent violence on and off the pitch while promoting unity among fans.

Agreement on enhanced matchday security protocols

One of the major concerns raised after the Nsoatreman incident was the minimal security presence at the venue.

In response, the FA, in collaboration with the Premier League clubs, has agreed to strengthen matchday security at all venues.

This includes increasing the number of security personnel and implementing improved emergency response plans.

    Strengthening collaboration with security agencies

The clubs also pledged to work closely with security agencies to prevent and address safety concerns, ensuring that football fans can enjoy matches in a secure environment.

Reports indicate that GFA regulations allow home clubs to assign security personnel, and by working closely with security agencies, they aim to provide enhanced safety measures on matchdays.

Commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable football experience

The clubs reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for all stakeholders, including fans, players, and officials.

Their goal is to make Ghanaian football a positive and welcoming experience for everyone involved.
