L-R: Ofori Amponsah, Barima Sidney and Bollie all have songs that are 20 years old L-R: Ofori Amponsah, Barima Sidney and Bollie all have songs that are 20 years old

The year 2005 marked one of the most iconic eras in Ghanaian music history.

Whether it was on the radio, on television, at a bar on a relaxed Friday night, or simply while passing by a trotro station, Ghanaian music was everywhere, and history was in the making.

Now, two decades later, songs from 2005 still get music lovers and dancers grooving whenever they’re played.

Let’s take a nostalgic dive into some unforgettable Ghanaian songs that have turned 20 years old this year:

Six notable personalities who missed Lumba’s one-week observation

    1. Kiss Your Bride – Bollie

First on the list is Kiss Your Bride. Since its release, this classic has been a staple at Ghanaian weddings. Produced by Hammer, the track remains timeless and turns 20 this year.

    2. Tuobodom – Nkasei

Despite its controversies, Tuobodom, now 20 years old, has since won hearts with its catchy hook:

“Yefi Tuobodom, beka capital town ne gyenegyene, beko Kumasi jooo, bekodi congressi.”

Any time this song came on, it got everyone grooving on the dance floor.

    3. Obiaa Nye Obiaa – Barima Sidney

A powerful track that addresses equality across all walks of life in Ghana, be it respect, education, money, or class. Sidney’s message in 20-year-old ‘Obia Nye Obiaa’ still resonates today.

Three Ghanaian rappers who have dominated Hennessy Africa Cypher since 2023

    4. Tsi Obenke Mi – King David

This song promotes unity and togetherness, emphasising that oneness is strength, while division leads to downfall. ‘Tsi Obenke Mi’, now 20-years old, has always been timeless.

    5. Rakia – Ofori Amponsah ft. Kofi Nti

When it comes to love and romance, Rakia was the song for proposals and serenades. Ofori Amponsah and Kofi Nti delivered a masterpiece that still melts hearts 20 years on.

I bet you didn’t notice these songs are now 20 years old. Whether you’re feeling nostalgic or just discovering them for the first time, these tracks are timeless gems in Ghana’s music history.

Meanwhile, watch as ‘Akwaaba’, ‘Woezor’ signage replaced with ‘Oobake’ at Nkrumah Memorial Park
