A big change to the international football calendar has been announced by Federation of International Association Football (FIFA).

Starting from the 2026/2027 season, the traditional September and October international breaks will be converged into a single extended window from September 21 to October 6.

The latest change is to provide smooth scheduling of international matches to provide national teams with a more cohesive period for competitive fixtures and preparations, and also reduce player fatigue.

The new format will allow national teams to use their time more efficiently, enabling back-to-back matches without players having to return to their clubs mid-cycle.

However the decision has brought discussions among clubs, players, and fans with the fear that the extended break could disrupt the momentum of domestic leagues, particularly in the early stages of the season.
