An Executive Member of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Mr Nkoo Joseph, has congratulated former Board Secretary of Accra Hearts of Oak, Mr Ernest Thompson, on his appointment as Board Member of the Ghana Sports Fund.
Mr Thompson was among an 11-member board inaugurated by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr Kofi Adams, in Accra last week.
According to Mr Joseph, Mr Thompson’s inclusion on the board was a reward for his endless advocacy through writings and various media interviews on the establishment of such a fund aimed to provide a more structured and sustainable way of funding sports in the country.
In Mr Joseph’s statement, “Lawyer Ernest Thompson was one of the few lawyers invited to FIFA to represent Hearts of Oak in their case when the Intercontinental Cup, which Hearts was supposed to be involved in after winning the Africa Cup, was cancelled.”
“He joined the legal team of FIFA to prepare FIFA’s case against the marketing team, which breached the contract with FIFA. He was based in Geneva for weeks with the other FIFA lawyers,” he added
According to Mr Joseph, who doubles as the Greater Accra representative of Premier League side, Berekum Chelsea, “Mr Thompson’s area of specialisation – finance and investment law – with vast experience in fund management makes him a good candidate on the board.
He said Mr Thompson comes with vast experience from his work with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), having led its legal and investment team to set up the Pan African Infrastructural Development Fund in South Africa and launched under the African Union (AU) and other investments across the globe.
He is also the first African to chair the Technical Commission on Fund Investments of the International Social Security Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland.
