Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, on Thursday, January 30, 2025, met with the leadership of the Public Utilities Workers Union of TUC (PUWU) as part of his stakeholder engagement in the energy sector since assuming office.

In an interaction with the group, the minister stated that due to inefficiencies in the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana, it was incumbent on the government to introduce the private sector into the system to ensure efficiency and save the power entity from collapse.

The minister informed the union members that a committee has been set up to engage all stakeholders in the energy sector, solicit their views on Private Sector Participation (PSP) in the distribution sector, and advise the government on the best model to adopt.

Mr. Jinapor emphasized that the government has not taken any decision to sell ECG.

“If we had taken a decision to sell ECG, then there would be no need to consult and engage you,” he said.

He added that the sector would collapse if nothing were done to ameliorate the inefficiencies in ECG.

For his part, the General Secretary of PUWU, Timothy Nyame, congratulated the minister on his appointment and said the union would support the ministry in transforming the sector.
