Media personality and entertainment pundit Nana Romeo has cautioned against the use of bodybuilders, popularly known as ‘macho men’, by politicians, especially during elections.
Speaking during a discussion on UTV, Romeo argued that political parties routinely hire these muscular enforcers to intimidate voters and opposition supporters, sometimes even engaging in violent attacks.
“Politicians have a habit of calling these men to escort them during elections to intimidate individuals. I don’t know how much they are being paid, because some of them don’t even think about what they are doing.
“Their habit of attacking individuals could get someone killed. Even the steroids they take to gain muscles can affect their health,” he warned.
He cited the electoral violence during the Ablekuma North constituency rerun on July 11, 2025 where the former MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, was attacked. According to Romeo, the situation could have turned tragic.
“What happened was very bad. If the police hadn’t intervened, they could have killed her,” he said.
Romeo also criticised the hypocrisy of some politicians, accusing them of condemning such acts while in opposition, only to repeat them once in power.
“The sad thing is that when another political party comes into power, they do the same thing. They condemn it one year, then turn around and do the same the next.”
He further condemned certain government appointees for mocking the incident on social media.
“Even after this, we’re seeing posts from some government appointees giving these men titles and joking about the incident.”
Finally, Romeo expressed disappointment in the Ghana Police Service saying, “Up till now, they haven’t been able to arrest anyone in connection with the incident.”
