In a historic announcement made at 6 pm on December 9, 2024, the Electoral Commission of Ghana declared John Dramani Mahama as the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana, 48 hours after the close of polls on December 7.
The announcement, which was made at 6 pm on December 9, declared Mahama the winner with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the votes.
However, the last three words of the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, were what solidified the declaration.
Right after declaring Mahama as the president-elect, Jean Mensa stated, “It is finished.”
The phrase is used to represent an end to an activity, particularly a draining or stressful activity, like an election.
With these words, Jean Mensa has put an end to the months of campaigning, sleepless nights, and endless speeches that usually characterise elections in Ghana.
