Media personality Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has called on the appropriate authorities to clarify the situation following the current NDC government’s disclosure that the country is facing a looming energy crisis.

Just a day after the new government was sworn into office, the energy minister-designate and NDC MP for Yapei-Kusawgu constituency, John Abdulai Jinapor, revealed that the country is at risk of a serious energy crisis due to insufficient fuel for power generation.

He further stated that the outgoing Nana-Addo-led government failed to make necessary fuel procurements despite repeated warnings.

This statement has since sparked a wave of discussions on social media, with some netizens accusing the NPP of attempting to sabotage the newly sworn-in NDC government.

Other critics have been quick to troll the new government, stating that President John Dramani Mahama, often associated with the ‘dumsor’ crisis, is once again leading the country in that direction shortly after taking office.

But sharing her thoughts on the ongoing development, Afia Pokua has pointed out that during the 2014-2015 period, the ‘dumsor’ crisis under the NDC was linked to issues with the country’s generation capacity but when the NPP took over, they claimed the issue was not with generation capacity but with financial capabilities.

Afia questioned why the country is now facing the same energy crisis again, stating that either the NDC or the NPP is lying.

She emphasised that the issue should not be occurring, especially considering that the NPP government had signed two Power Purchasing Agreements (PPA) to add approximately 720 Megawatts (MW) to the country’s power generation capacity.

Afia Pokua urged the truth to be revealed, adding that she suspects foul play from one of the parties (NDC or NPP).

“In 2014-2015, the reason ‘dumsor’ was a problem during the NDC’s tenure was because they said there were issues with our generation capacity. When the NPP came into power and renegotiated, they stated that the problem was not with generation capacity, but with financial capabilities. So why are we going back to ‘dumsor’ now? Between the NDC and NPP, someone is lying. Not now that the NPP said to have signed two purchasing agreements,” she said in a viral video.

Afia Pokua also called on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy to be bold and transparent, stating, “We don’t like stupidity. ‘dumsor’ is a painful experience, and if care is not taken, someone could go to jail for causing financial loss. There is no reason for someone to sign a power purchasing agreement and still face this crisis.”
