The Ministry of Education and the Gates Foundation are exploring areas of collaboration to strengthen Ghana’s capacity to develop and deploy locally driven solutions in the fight against malaria.

The discussions centred on building local expertise in emerging malaria-control technologies, particularly research into the development of malaria-free mosquitoes, alongside technology transfer and institutional capacity building.

The commitment was reaffirmed by the Minister of Education during a meeting with a delegation from the Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF), led by its Board Chairman, Prof. Eric Yirenkyi Danquah, and the Gates Foundation, led by its Deputy Director for Malaria, Mr Bruno Moonen.

Prof. Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, underscored the need to equip Ghanaian researchers with the technical expertise and resources required to develop and adapt such technologies locally.

The Education Minister said sustained investment in research, talent development and strong local institutions would be critical to advancing the proposed collaboration.

He said the broader objective was to strengthen Ghana’s research ecosystem, reduce malaria transmission and support the country’s ambition of eliminating the disease.
