Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe has expressed frustration over a rule change that allows Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo to feature in their Carabao Cup semifinal game against Manchester City.

Previously, English Football League (EFL) rules did not permit a player to represent more than one club in a single campaign.

However, a new modification to the rule now states that a player can represent a maximum of two clubs in one campaign, meaning Semenyo is eligible to face Newcastle in the first leg at St James’ Park on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

The manager noted that he does not agree with the amendment, as he believes it undermines the integrity of the game depending on its impact.

“Yeah, it was nice to find out that rule had changed after finding out they’d signed him. I have to say, that’s probably one rule change I wouldn’t be supportive of at this current moment,” he said, as reported by Daily Mail.

Despite his frustration, Howe praised the former Bournemouth winger, saying he admires his footballing skills and believes he will deliver for the Citizens.

“But Antoine’s had an incredible season. I’m a big admirer of his and he scored on his debut, so fair play to him. I think Man City have signed a very, very good player,” he added.

Semenyo scored and provided an assist on his debut as Manchester City demolished Exeter 10–1 at the Etihad Stadium, kicking off his campaign in extraordinary fashion.

He is expected to complement Erling Haaland with goals as the club pursues the Premier League, Champions League, and other titles.
