President Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour President Ghana Journalists Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour

As the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) holds its nationwide elections today June 30, 2025, all signs point to a decisive re-election for incumbent president, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour.

Dwumfour’s first term has garnered widespread acclaim for its transformative initiatives across journalism welfare, professional development, press freedom, and institutional growth, earning him broad support among members and positioning him as the frontrunner in this year’s polls.

A hallmark of his presidency has been the strategic expansion of training and capacity-building opportunities.

The launch of a five-year scholarship scheme with Wisconsin International University College, along with the organization of over 20 nationwide training workshops, has significantly enhanced professional development for journalists, particularly ahead of the 2024 elections.

Collaborative efforts with international partners have further enhanced the skills and knowledge of GJA members.

Another achievement is the creation of the Journalists’ Support Fund (JSF), a groundbreaking initiative providing legal and financial aid to journalists under threat, retirees, and members facing personal hardships.

Dwumfour has also taken a firm stance on press freedom, publicly naming and blacklisting individuals involved in attacks on journalists, and leading interventions in high-profile media disputes.

Infrastructure has seen a facelift under his leadership. The Ghana International Press Centre has undergone substantial renovations.

GJA membership has also seen a notable increase, driven by engagement events such as the association’s annual dinner and enhanced awards ceremonies.

Looking ahead, Dwumfour has outlined a five-point agenda to drive his second term:

1.Improved Working Conditions – Push for standardization of journalist contracts and equitable remuneration.

2.Insurance & Welfare – Introduce comprehensive national schemes covering health, life, and occupational risks.

3.Scholarships & Training – Expand professional development opportunities nationwide.

4.Regional Empowerment – Strengthen grassroots journalism through targeted reorganization and support.

5.Press Freedom & Safety – Reinforce advocacy for journalist protection, guided by his rallying call: “Journalists’ Lives Matter.”
