    The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that the new number plates, set to be introduced next year, will be printed in-house and linked directly to vehicle owners rather than the vehicles themselves.

    The updated plates will feature the region of registration at the top, a unique four-digit number, and enhanced modern security features, replacing the current system where the year of registration appears on the plate.

    The Director for Driving Training, Testing, and Licensing (DTTL) at the DVLA, Mr. Kafui Semevo, disclosed the move during a media engagement in Accra yesterday. He noted that the shift from private-sector printing to in-house production would allow the state to have full control over the process and address security concerns.

    “The current arrangement engaged the private sector to print plates when assigning numbers to vehicles. However, we have identified flaws in that system. In-house printing ensures security and gives the state full control over the assignment of numbers to vehicle owners,” Mr. Semevo explained.

    He urged owners of vehicles and motorcycles to re-register to access the new number plates and ensure their details are captured in the DVLA database. The registration process will be rolled out in phases, with new cars prioritized starting January 1, 2026, while existing vehicles will begin registration in April.

    The DVLA Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Neequaye Kotey, assured vehicle owners of a seamless and efficient roll-out system. He highlighted that the Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) feature on the new plates would help track stolen vehicles and enhance road safety and security.

    Mr. Kotey further noted that the DVLA would collaborate with security agencies, providing them with the necessary gadgets for verification and tracking purposes.
