People across the country are currently joining together under one roof to celebrate the festive season – but that may leave many with some strange sleeping arrangements.

In an annual tradition, people take to social media to share hilarious pictures of their make shift home for the night in an event aptly named #duvetknowitschristmas.

For the last 13 years, people have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their pictures but this year, the event has moved across to BlueSky, which is attracting followers from Elon Musk‘s platform.

Not only is it an opportunity for users to have a bit of fun, but it also raises money for charity Centrepoint, which supports young homeless people.

Last year, £43,152 was raised for the charity, narrowly missing out on the £50,000 target.

Taking to BlueSky, organiser Rhodri Marsden shared the premise behind the 14-year-long tradition, writing: ‘On Xmas Eve 2011 people started sending me photos of their sleeping arrangements, often compromised by there being Too Many People At The Inn And Not Enough Beds. I reposted them. A few years later it was given the hashtag by someone funnier than me’.

He described the submitted pictures as ‘chaotic’ and a form of festive fun shared between strangers online.

‘Incredibly, over the last few years around £200,000 has been raised for homeless charities as a result of this thing’, he added, before appealing for people to once again donate to Centrepoint.

A festive looking mannequin called Bob is keeping one couple company this evening

Elsewhere, someone is bunking down next to an exercise bike, a log burner and a piano

Rory was comfortable with his House Dalek called Colin last year too

This year’s offering includes a House Dalek called Colin, a hamster, a red mannequin called Bob and even a piano keeping house guest company while they sleep through until Christmas Day.

Writing on BlueSky, the Dobson family shared a sweet snap of their son Rory looking cosy in a Christmas duvet being watched over by a giant Dalek.

‘Colin the House Dalek is keeping an eye on Rory in the dining room again this Christmas Eve’, they wrote. ‘His brother has been banished to my office’.

Another shared a picture of a make shift bed next to a red martial arts training dummy called ‘Bob’ writing that they had ‘tried to make him look festive and welcoming’ with a Santa hat for their sister and brother-in-law.

One aunt shared a picture of her nephews bedroom, which he had kindly offered to let her stay in, which came complete with its own pet, writing: ‘Tonight I am sharing with 500 empty Prime bottles. And a hamster’.

And one poor person has been regulated to the utility room, writing their sleeping quarters could come in ‘handy if [they] need an ice cream in the night’.

Some also cosied up with more unusual items including a snooker table, a peloton, hockey equipment and an electric piano.

So far, £13,540 has been raised from more than 500 donations on the GoFundMe page set up alongside the event.
