Michel Kuka Mboladinga, the DR Congo supporter famously nicknamed “Lumumba,” has been rewarded by his government after becoming one of the most recognisable faces of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Throughout the tournament, Kuka captured global attention with his calm, statue-like presence in the stands and his striking resemblance to Patrice Emery Lumumba, one of the fathers of Congolese independence.
While fans around him sang and jumped, he stood motionless, draped in national colours, a silent but powerful image of pride that quickly went viral.
Although the Leopards’ AFCON journey ended in heartbreak following a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Algeria in the round of 16, Kuka’s impact endured beyond the pitch.

According to reports, DR Congo’s Minister of Sports personally honoured him on Sunday, January 11, 2026, presenting him with a brand-new Jeep on behalf of President Félix Tshisekedi in recognition of his unique contribution to the national team’s campaign.
Congolese journalist Yves Buya also confirmed the reports, posting on his X handle and praising Kuka for his support.
The tweet read:
“An iconic figure in the stands and a true symbol of Congolese supporters during the AFCON, Michel Kuka, nicknamed “Lumumba”, was honored by the authorities.
The Minister of Sports, Didier BUDIMBU, offered him a Jeep as a token of appreciation for his outstanding role in the entertainment and African atmosphere of the competition.
A strong tribute to the 12th man, who has become for many the human mascot of the AFCON.”
Kuka’s popularity was not limited to his home country either, as AFCON organisers and the Algerian Football Federation also acknowledged his presence.
