Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has joined a growing chorus of voices calling for a state funeral in honour of the late highlife musician Daddy Lumba, whose music career shaped Ghana’s cultural identity for decades.

Paying a condolence visit to the bereaved family, Dr Bawumia reflected on Lumba’s powerful legacy, lauding the depth and resonance of his music across generations.

“Lumba was such a great musician, and his impact has been so great. He was so deep,” he said, fondly referencing some of the artiste’s most celebrated works.

Describing the musician as a national treasure, Dr. Bawumia advocated for formal state recognition of his contributions, insisting that a state-sanctioned burial would be a befitting gesture of national gratitude.

“This is a national funeral, and I want to plead for a state burial and a state funeral for him,” he stated during the emotional gathering.

Dr Bawumia acknowledged that the scale of public admiration for Daddy Lumba transcends official labels.

“But the truth is that whether he is granted state funeral or not, it is going to be a state funeral. Ghanaians are according to him his deserved national recognition.”

The former Vice President was accompanied by senior figures from the New Patriotic Party, including Members of Parliament and regional executives, all of whom came to pay homage.

Since Lumba’s death, tributes have poured in from all corners of the country, reinforcing calls for the state to formally honour the life and work of one of Ghana’s most influential musical legends.
