Ghanaian Amapiano DJ Mark Kwesi Arthur, popularly known as DJ Azonto, has threatened legal action against actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly called LilWin, for allegedly using his trademarked term “Alla Woyo” to promote an upcoming movie.
In a statement issued by DJ Azonto’s management team, the Rolls Royce Family, the musician claimed exclusive ownership of the phrase, which has become synonymous with his brand.
The statement alleged that LilWin’s movie posters featuring “Alla Woyo” circulated on social media without prior approval, thereby violating his intellectual property rights.
“‘Alla Woyo’ is an original creative property solely owned by DJ Azonto. For years, our team has cautioned the entire creative industry against using this term without permission,” the statement read.
DJ Azonto’s camp is demanding an unusual compensation package, including cement, land, and cash.
“As such, DJ Azonto is demanding 12,000,000 bags of Ibrahim Mahama’s Dzata Cement, royalties from all movie earnings connected to the use of the term ‘Alla Woyo,’ a $15 billion investment commitment into DJ Azonto Microfinance, 90% of revenue from Stephen Adom Kyei Duah’s Second Chance Church, 1,000 acres of land in Kumasi, and a charcoal-black GLE with white rims,” the statement added.
The statement further warned that legal action would be pursued at the ECOWAS Court if LilWin fails to comply or negotiate compensation promptly.
DJ Azonto demands US$10 million from Bawumia for using his song without consent
This is not DJ Azonto’s first copyright dispute. Earlier this year, his team demanded $10 million from Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the alleged unauthorised use of his hit song Fa No Fom during campaign events.
