Entertainment analyst and broadcaster Ola Michael has blamed the latest utility tariff increases on the mismanagement plaguing the country’s power sector.

His comments come amid public fury over the recent 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs and a 4.02% rise in water charges, effective May 3, 2025.

“The heart-breaking truth is we’re buying power at GH¢100 and selling at GH¢40; that’s a GH¢60 loss on every transaction,” he lamented.

He cited some major causes, including the fluctuations in the dollar to cedi rates, illegal connections and debts by citizens, as some of the causes of the constant increases.

“By the time we finish selling the power and convert to dollars to buy more, the dollar to cedi rate has shot up, so we are already at a loss.

“Illegal connections are thriving and people are refusing to pay their light bills,” he said.

Michael particularly slammed the heavy incentives given to government officials, including free electricity, which, according to him, further adds to the losses incurred.

“Monies that should be used as revenue are being taken out as allowances and bonuses by executives. Some government officials and executives are not even paying light bills.

“All this is why the tariffs keep increasing. So when the NPP keep shouting that Mahama has brought back dumsor, tell them to go and check their agreement with the IMF,” he said.

Ola Micheal also pointed out the recent disappearance of critical ECG infrastructure, questioning if there is really hope for the country with the problems.

“Look at the ECG containers that were brought in to boost power supply. They are all missing. And you say Ghana will be fine?” he asked.

He added, “I’ll have no choice but to return to my family home. At least I won’t have to pay all these bills.”
