The desperate search for a 21-year-old college student was underway after he went missing during a Michigan winter storm.

Northern Michigan University student Trenton Massey was last seen on video on Sunday at 3.25am in the snowy area of East Baraga Ave and the Founder’s Landing Boardwalk in Marquette.

The Marquette Police Department said Massey appeared to be ‘disoriented and having trouble walking,’ wearing an olive-green and black jacket with dark pants.

Officials believe he was likely trying to reach his residence on McMillian Street while temperatures that night dropped to 19C, according to Fox News 11.

Captain of Detectives Christopher Aldrich of the Marquette Police Department told PEOPLE that multiple factors could have led to Massey’s disoriented state, possibly consuming alcohol, and also could have affected by the frigid temperatures.

‘He appeared to have severe stages of hypothermia, running, falling, running, falling,’ said Massey’s mother, Sarah Brock, in a post to Facebook.

Officials are urging local residents in the area where the missing student is to check the camera footage around the time of the disappearance.

Additionally, residents are asked to check around their property, including inside vehicles and in buildings such as sheds or barns, for any signs of Massey.

Search parties, made up of officials and good Samaritans, spent Monday combing the area, bundled up as they traversed freezing temperatures just below 10C.

Multiple businesses within the city have opened their doors to volunteers as warming shelters.

Searchers used sticks and other tools to poke snow piles, hoping to find Massey.

The dangerous conditions forced Northern Michigan University to close on Monday.

‘Our thoughts remain with everyone involved in the search for Trenton Massey,’ wrote the Range Bank Community Outreach Coordinator, who set up a headquarters for searchers.

‘We’re keeping Trenton, his family, and the entire NMU community close in our hearts.’

Massey’s family posted online, thanking the community for their help: ‘People we don’t even know are being so kind and caring.’

‘They have had drones, dogs, and many other resources looking for him. I am frantic, helpless, sad, mad, worried sick, all the emotions.’
