Gospel singer Great Ampong has recounted a personal discussion he once had with the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba.

In a recent interview on Neat FM with Ola Michael, Ampong said the conversation centered on Lumba’s growing anxiety about the future of the men in his lineage. According to Ampong, the late singer believed a recurring family pattern was steadily reducing the number of males across generations.

He explained that Lumba traced the issue back to his upbringing. His own mother, he said, had two daughters and one son. When Lumba later started his own family, the same pattern emerged, with his wife giving birth to two girls and one boy.

Ampong said this repetition troubled Lumba deeply, as he feared it could eventually leave the family without any male descendants.

“We were once having a conversation and he told me that there’s no male in the family. The men are finishing. His mother gave birth to two girls and one boy.

“When he started his own family, he realised his wife was following the same trend by giving birth to two girls and one boy,” he said.

The gospel musician indicated that this fear went on to influence a major life decision by the highlife star. Lumba, he said, believed expanding his family with another partner could increase the chances of having more sons.

“From the look of things, it will get to a time where no males will be found in the family so he decided to be with the other woman also so he could get more male children,” he stated.

Apart from family matters, Ampong also reflected on the bond he shared with the late musician, describing a relationship built on trust and closeness. He said Daddy Lumba often took him along on trips around town, walked him through his properties, and even sought his views on future development plans.

“We were so close and he used to take me around town to show me some of his properties. He wanted to do some projects on some of his lands and he asked for my opinion,” he said.

Great Ampong added that their relationship sometimes felt more personal than professional.

“When he’s in a good mood, we used to communicate like father and son. He had a level of trust and love for me, that’s why he made me get close to him,” he said.
