MTN Ghana has raised alarm over a rising trend in which criminals deliberately cut fibre-optic cables to disrupt network connectivity, enabling armed robbery and other attacks in targeted communities. According to the telecom operator, these deliberate acts create communication blackouts, preventing victims and community members from seeking help or reporting incidents promptly.

Philip Ennin, a Field Service Engineer at MTN Ghana, disclosed this at the 2025 MTN Media and Stakeholder Forum in Sunyani, describing the situation as a national security concern. While many cable cuts occur due to construction activities, an increasing number are now linked to criminal intent. Between January and November 2025, MTN recorded 211 fibre-optic cuts across the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions, with severely affected areas including Goaso, Mim, Sampa, and Drobo.

To address the issue, MTN is adopting innovative measures such as strengthened monitoring along fibre routes and mounting aerial fibre lines. Jemima Kotei-Walsh, Chief Customer Experience Officer of MTN Ghana, noted that the company has invested over $1 billion in the past five years to enhance Ghana’s digital infrastructure, including $240 million this year for expanding fibre, 4G, and 5G services. She emphasized that these upgrades form the digital backbone supporting Ghana’s economic growth.

Highlighting MTN’s renewed focus on innovation, Ms Kotei-Walsh shared that the company recently launched its Digital Fest, showcasing technological solutions addressing customer needs—from MoMo business applications supporting SMEs, to Abena AI, Ghana’s first multi-lingual voice assistant, as well as initiatives empowering developers, gamers, and students. She added, “We are building experiences that reflect who we are as Ghanaians—our languages, our culture, and our aspirations.” The Chief Customer Experience Officer also commended the media for its role as a key stakeholder in shaping Ghana’s digital future.
