Fresh signs of division have emerged within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following revelations that former Vice President and flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was visibly unhappy during the party’s Peace Pact signing ceremony.

The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has confirmed that Dr. Bawumia is deeply dissatisfied with key developments ahead of the party’s presidential primary, accusing party leadership of failing to enforce rules fairly and allowing persistent attacks against him to go unchecked.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV, Mr. Awuku disclosed that Dr. Bawumia has repeatedly raised concerns about what he perceives as selective justice and a lack of neutrality within the party’s internal electoral process.

According to him, the former Vice President believes he has been the target of sustained verbal and political attacks across various campaign platforms, yet party leaders have allegedly turned a blind eye despite multiple complaints.

Mr. Awuku further criticized the Presidential Elections Committee’s decision to ban proxy voting, describing it as unrealistic and harmful. He argued that the move has effectively disenfranchised hundreds of Dr. Bawumia’s supporters living abroad, worsening tensions within the party.

“Obviously, he wasn’t happy. He hasn’t been happy about a few developments,” Mr. Awuku admitted. “He believes that the Presidential Elections Committee and the party are not playing on an equal playing field when it comes to enforcing the rules of the game.”

He added that Dr. Bawumia’s discomfort was evident at the Peace Pact ceremony, noting that “looking at his countenance and demeanor, he is human. He cannot pretend when all is not well.”

The comments have intensified concerns about growing internal rifts within the NPP as the January 31 presidential primary draws closer. Political observers warn that unresolved grievances could undermine party cohesion and weaken its electoral fortunes if leadership fails to act decisively.

Mr. Awuku stressed that addressing Dr. Bawumia’s concerns is critical, cautioning that continued dissatisfaction among key contenders could threaten unity at a time when the party needs it most.
