The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has called for urgent and coordinated national action to stem the growing menace of illicit drug trafficking and abuse in the country.
The Bishops said the fight against narcotic drugs required stronger enforcement, tighter surveillance and greater collaboration among the government, law enforcement agencies, the Church, families and other stakeholders to protect the country, particularly its young people.
They said the drug menace had moved beyond a routine criminal matter to become a serious national concern and a profound moral crisis requiring sustained and collective action.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the President of the Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Bishop of Sunyani, the Bishops expressed concern over the interception of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine by French customs authorities at Dunkirk on September 10, 2026.
The cocaine, estimated to have a street value of €225 million, was reportedly concealed in a container of plastic waste that had arrived from Ghana, with part of the consignment allegedly destined for Antwerp, Belgium. Read More
