Marriage Counselor and Educationist, Theodosia Jackson, has praised President John Mahama for making July 1 the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, describing it as a “spiritual directive” and a hopeful turning point in Ghana’s journey toward unity and prosperity.

Speaking during a service held at Jackson University College in Kumasi to mark the inaugural observance of the day, Jackson who also serves as Principal of Jackson College of Education hailed the initiative as a timely intervention.

“Prayer plays a significant role in the success of everything. If the president has declared a nationwide prayer for the country, then it is a clear sign that Ghana has hope for a brighter future. This is not just a political decision; it is obedience to divine guidance. Prayer is not a sign of weakness. it’s the strongest foundation we can have,” she added.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, now set to be observed annually, coincides with Republic Day, a day historically marking Ghana’s attainment of full republican status in 1960.

This year’s celebration, the first since President Mahama’s declaration, sought to foster national healing, spiritual reflection, and collective responsibility for Ghana’s socio-economic recovery.

Delivering the keynote sermon, Reverend James Annan of the Methodist Church, Aprade Society, also called on Ghanaians to embrace moral and spiritual renewal as the foundation for lasting national unity and truth.

“Preaching from Jeremiah 29:7–12, I say: Speak life, not curses. Promote unity, not tribalism. Uphold truth, not rumors. Seek justice with love, not vengeance,” he said.

He added that Ghana’s development must be rooted in love, inclusivity, and the integrity of spiritual values.

“Our challenges as a nation are not only economic or political, but they are also deeply moral and spiritual. If we do not rebuild our nation on the values of truth, peace, and justice, we cannot move forward,” he noted.
