Puerto Rico’s WBO/WBA/Ring minimumweight champion, Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo took on the challenge of Filipino Jayson “The Striker” Vayson at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA.
Near the end of a feel-’em out first round, a cuffing shot around the neck of Vayson, pulled him to the canvas, prompting referee Thomas Taylor to rule a knockdown. Vayson was not hurt, and took it in stride. Vayson landed a nice straight right to the chin of Collazo, knocking the champ back on his heels in round two.
Vayson seemed to take the fourth as he hurt Collazo to the body which put the champ in retreat for the majority of the round. By the end of the fifth, Vayson sported a mouse under his left eye.
In the seventh round, with Vayson against the ropes, under some pressure, but fighting back, his corner inexplicably stepped up onto the ring apron and signaled to referee Thomas Taylor to pull their man out of action! Then, other members of Vayson’s team began arguing with the chief second who stopped it. It seemed a bit of a head-scratcher, as Vayson was in this fight, with only half of it completed. The time of the stoppage was 1:41 of the seventh. Collazo is now 13-0, 10 KOs. The unlucky Vayson falls to 14-2-1, 8 KOs. Reportedly, all three judges had the fight 59-54 in favor Collazo.
