The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), in a strategic engagement with the leadership of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF), has expressed strong interest in exploring ways to promote Armwrestling within its institution and to use the sport as a tool for an active and healthy lifestyle amongst its staff.

The meeting, held in Accra, forms part of GAF’s broader outreach to corporate bodies aimed at strengthening long-lasting partnerships for future benefits and to encourage participation in Armwrestling by many Ghanaians.

Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, who led the delegation, revealed the federation’s vision, recent achievements, and the support armwrestling brings on board as one of the fastest-growing sports on the continent.

He stressed the need for partnerships with reputable institutions like the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority to drive sports development for a healthy lifestyle for the working group, and also provide opportunities for active youth.

Osei Asibey noted that the Federation’s aim is not only to win medals but also to use Armwrestling as a tool for youth empowerment, discipline, and national pride.

“Armwrestling is a sport of choice. During the 2023 Africa Games, we managed to scoop a total of 41 medals out of the total 69 won by Team Ghana. This tells how far we have come and what we are aiming to achieve,” he said.

He formally announced Ghana’s participation in the forthcoming Africa Armwrestling Championship in Nigeria, where the Golden Arms will participate as the defending champions, having emerged the overall winners of the last edition of the Africa Armwrestling Championship, sweeping 132 medals to top the table.

Stephen Wilfred Arthur, Director-General of Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, commended the Ghana Armwrestling Federation for the effort to always explore key areas to develop the sport.

He affirmed the Authority’s keen interest in supporting sports development and welcomed the opportunity to explore meaningful partnerships with GAF. He revealed that the GCAA plans to encourage about 60% of their youthful staff to stay active by playing Armwrestling during breaks and after work.

The GCAA will introduce a yearly Aviation Sports Festival, which will feature Armwrestling as one of the key disciplines.

The initiative, he explained, would promote wellness, teamwork, and sporting excellence within the aviation space and beyond.

Arthur assured the delegation of a fruitful partnership, highlighting the Authority’s readiness to contribute to the growth of the sport.

Present at the meeting from the Ghana Armwrestling Federation were Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, Vice President, Jesse Adjepong, Secretary General, Godfrey William Amarteifio, board member and Madam Phillipina Frimpong, administrator of GAF.

Also from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority were Ebenezer Sagoe, Director of HR, Eric Mireku Amaning, Head of Corporate Communications and other senior management.
