Civil society group Citizen Eye Ghana has named Julius Debrah as the most strategic and unifying choice for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the party’s 2028 presidential primary.
In a detailed report released Tuesday, July 30, 2025, Citizen Eye Ghana assessed potential contenders across four key dimensions: regional balance, age and energy, executive governance experience, and leadership qualities.
The group concluded that Debrah’s background and political profile align closely with the needs of the party and the electorate.
The report notes that Ghanaian voters have historically favored regional diversity in presidential leadership.
With the current president from the Northern Region, analysts suggest that a southern candidate could offer the NDC stronger nationwide appeal in 2028.
“While northern contenders like Hon. Haruna Iddrisu are respected, the NDC must be mindful of maintaining national balance, Julius Debrah hailing from the Eastern Region, brings that strategic geographical advantage,” the report stated.
According to the report, electoral trends since the beginning of Ghana’s Fourth Republic reveal a voter preference for candidates who combine maturity with vitality.
At 59, Debrah is seen as occupying the “sweet spot” between youthful dynamism and seasoned leadership.
Comparisons in the report highlight the age gap between Debrah and other potential contenders, such as the 68-year-old NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the relatively younger Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is 44 but seen as lacking extensive executive experience.
“His experience as Chief of Staff where he coordinated government operations and advised the presidency gives him an edge in understanding the complexities of national governance. He is not a candidate who needs on-the-job training,” it noted.
Per the report, Debrah’s leadership approach also received praise as stakeholders interviewed described him as humble, loyal, and widely respected within both the grassroots and upper ranks of the NDC.
Citizen Eye Ghana highlighted his reputation for quiet competence and servant leadership as a rare asset in Ghanaian politics.
“Debrah embodies ethical and inclusive leadership qualities Ghanaians increasingly demand. His vision emphasises development, youth empowerment, and public service rooted in integrity.”
Citizen Eye Ghana concluded its findings with a direct appeal to the NDC’s leadership and delegates, urging them to make an “evidence-based and forward-looking” choice as the party prepares for 2028.
“In a time of political uncertainty and governance fatigue, the NDC must prioritize unity, competence, and credibility. Julius Debrah represents more than a candidacy. He symbolizes a path to national renewal,” the group emphasised.
