Wangkang Ceramics Company Limited, a chinese firm based at Eshiem in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis in Western Region, has complied fully with a directive issued by Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, to stop blocking and polluting river Anankore with their operational activities

Wangkang Ceramics Company Limited, had been given a one week ultimatum by the Minister to stop illegal activities obstructing the flow and purity of River Anankore, one of the water bodies located at Inchaban in the Western Region

Earnest Hoffman, officer, Water Resources Commission (WRC) at Ghana Water Company Limited, had briefed the Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson on these illegal activities of the company against expressed instructions.

In response, the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, gave the Chinese firm an ultimatum to comply with his directive.

The Minister had insisted that the company’s activities should not tamper with operations of Ghana Water Company Limited and for that matter the Anankore river

The water company had reported the Chinese firm to the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) following refusal of the Chinese company to comply with the directive of Ghana Water Company and Water Resources Commission (WRC).

An attempt made by the water company and the Commission to settle the lingering matter had suffered severely due to an entrenched position adopted by the Chinese.

On Friday, 7th March 2025, the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson had a meeting with the stakeholders and brokered an amicable settlement of the impasse which had been raging since last year.

The Minister had explained that the production and supply of water in the Metropolis and its nearby communities shouldn’t be obstructed by activities of the Chinese firm.

Consequently, he instructed the private company to immediately find an alternative way of managing its waste and also free the River Anankore from any obstructions.

These, he said, once carried out, would allow Ghana Water Company Limited to produce and supply water without any inconveniences being created.

Again, he had said that pollution of the water body through activities of the ceramic company must cease following the directive.

He gave the Chinese company a one week ultimatum to do the right thing and report back as determination of the matter hinged solely on their action and inaction.

Subsequently, the Chinese firm complied with the directive and reported back about improved activities at site.

On Thursday, 13th March 2025, the Minister followed up to assess the situation at the company’s site.

He was briefed by the General Manager of the company Chang Hong on their operations and what has been done to address the concerns of the water company.

The manager later took the Minister and his team on a tour to all the departments of the company, and at the exact spot outside the company where the controversy regarding the pollution and blockage of River Anankore was raging.

At the end, Joseph Nelson expressed satisfaction about the compliance rate and also assured the Chinese firm of a healthy working relationship.
