An engineering lecturer at Accra Technical University (ATU) believes that the persistent challenges facing the engineering and built environment sectors can be effectively addressed through technical conferences.

Engineer Dr. Mark Pim-Wusu, Head of the Department of Building Technology at ATU, emphasized the importance of such gatherings in shaping innovative solutions while equipping students and professionals with relevant knowledge.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming REACO Conference 2025, to be held at Accra Technical University on June 12, 2025, and focused on tackling pressing issues in infrastructure, sustainability, and urban development, he stated, “Conferences are key to the development of nations.”

“Electricity costs are rising, but innovations in energy-efficient building design are available. These are the kinds of ideas students and professionals need to be exposed to,” Dr. Pim-Wusu noted.

He added that conferences also provide a platform for participants to showcase their capabilities and learn from others.

“It’s an avenue to share ideas. The knowledge gained here can directly influence how we plan, build, and innovate,” he said.

The REACO Conference, organized by REACO International, is scheduled for June 26–28, 2025, at the Accra Digital Centre.

This year’s theme is “Resilient Infrastructure: Pragmatic Solutions for a Changing World.”

The event is expected to bring together engineers, architects, contractors, urban planners, and policy experts.

In addition to technical sessions and exhibitions, the conference will feature a field trip on June 28 to observe real-world applications of resilient infrastructure practices.

Ebenezer Duncan, Executive Director of REACO International, stressed the critical responsibility engineers have in shaping safe environments.

“If a doctor makes a mistake, one life is affected. But when an engineer errs and a building collapses, many lives are at risk,” he warned, calling for greater accountability—especially in construction on vulnerable terrain, such as waterlogged areas.

He added that the conference aims to move beyond dialogue by fostering partnerships and exchanging practical solutions.

“We are not just organizing a conference; we are building a community of professionals committed to creating a sustainable future,” Duncan stated.
