Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional chairman of the NPP Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional chairman of the NPP

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiko, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia is destined to become president on the party’s ticket before any aspirant could.

Drawing a parallel with past US leaders, he mentioned how certain politicians paved the way for others, referencing the paths of Joe Biden and Barack Obama.

In his analogy, he suggested that just as Biden played a role in relation to Obama’s presidency, party members and the various aspirants should recognise Bawumia’s precedence in the NPP’s path to governance.

Speaking to delegates in Atwuma in the Ashanti Region, he explained that “If Allan had fully supported Nana Addo to win the 2008 elections, he would have been the next in command to take over after Nana Addo.”

However, he alleged that this was not done, saying, “Allan is a fine gentleman, but the presidency has eluded him. We are left with only 9%, therefore, if we support, he Bawumia can make it.

“Then your preferred candidate can take over when he is done with his term. In fact, if we had fully backed Dr Bawumia in the 2024 general election to win, his first term would have started counting to the end for another person also to come,” he emphasised.

Dr Bawumia led the NPP to the December 2024 elections as its presidential candidate but lost to the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama.

He has staged another comeback by aspiring to lead the party to the next general elections, which will be held on December 7, 2025.

Five distinguished members of the NPP are aspiring to lead the party as its flagbearer in the 2028 general elections.

The aspirants are: former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and the party’s former General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong.

The rest are former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and former Agric Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong, who has been the member of parliament for Abetifi since 2016.

Per Chairman Wontumi’s analogy, all the aforementioned aspirants who desire to lead the party must be prepared to support Dr Bawumia to first lead and wrestle power from the NDC before their dreams can be realised.

Meanwhile, the party has scheduled January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primaries, where delegates will be expected to line up and cast secret votes to elect one out of the five aspirants.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP has declared that no member of the party with presidential ambitions will ever become president unless Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia becomes president first.
