The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) has announced the appointment of Prof. Alex Manu as its new Executive Director.

Renowned for his expertise in medical statistical epidemiology and over two decades of impactful work in public health, Prof. Manu’s leadership is set to amplify CSJ’s mission to advance social equity and justice.

Prof. Manu’s distinguished career reflects his dedication to improving healthcare access for vulnerable populations. His academic credentials, including an MD, a diploma in Pediatrics, an MSc in Medical Statistics, and a PhD in Epidemiology, underpin his groundbreaking work in Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (MNCAH), quality improvement, and early childhood development.

Prof. Manu’s work gained international recognition with the 2013 Cecily Williams Prize, awarded by the University of London for his doctoral thesis that revolutionized the health outcomes of underserved populations. His research consistently bridges the gap between data-driven insights and actionable policies, ensuring high-quality health interventions reach those most in need.

Over the last eight years, Prof. Manu has played a pivotal role in implementing Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health – Quality Improvement (MNCH-QI) initiatives and operationalizing maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) frameworks worldwide.

His global impact includes collaborations with UNICEF, WHO, and UNFPA, as well as partnerships with major funders like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, and Save the Children.

As a member of technical working groups such as Countdown to 2030 Child Survival TWG and the UNICEF/WHO Quality, Equity, and Dignity (QED) initiative, Prof. Manu has contributed to advancing international health strategies. His research has been featured in esteemed publications, including The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine.

Prof. Manu’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for the Centre for Social Justice, as it seeks to strengthen its advocacy, research, and community engagement efforts.

With expertise in corporate diplomacy, strategic planning, and knowledge management, Prof. Manu aims to drive systemic change and position CSJ as a thought leader in social justice and policy reform.

“We are thrilled to welcome Prof. Alex Manu to the Centre for Social Justice,” said Dr. Amanda Coffee, CSJ’s Governing Council Chair. “His unparalleled experience and unwavering passion for creating a fairer world will undoubtedly elevate our work and impact.”

As Executive Director, Prof. Manu will lead initiatives to address systemic inequalities and champion policies that foster an inclusive society.
