Cape Coast – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to elect its flagbearer in January 2025 following its loss in the 2024 general elections. Hopefuls are now crisscrossing the length and breadth of the country, canvassing for delegate support.

Although five candidates are vying to lead the party, the race is increasingly narrowing to a two-horse contest between businessman and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, and Ghana’s immediate past Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a competitive election such as this, securing the endorsement of one’s home region can provide a crucial springboard to galvanize support nationwide.

In line with this, a majority of Central Region delegates have declared their unflinching support for their native son, Kennedy Agyapong. They cite his years of unmatched party loyalty, passion, dedication, and strong vision for Ghana as qualities that set him apart.

Mr. Emmanuel Otoo, popularly known as ‘Adakaba,’ a Polling Station Chair in Saltpond, stated that without prejudice to other aspirants, he and fellow regional delegates believe Agyapong is best positioned to wrestle power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 elections.

“If the party really wants power in 2028, the most likable person amongst the lot is Honourable Ken,” he emphasized. “While any other candidate is competent to lead the party, if we’re after power, then no one comes close to Honourable Ken.”

However, current dynamics appear to favor former Vice President Bawumia. Recent polls from December 2024 show Bawumia remains the frontrunner among delegates, commanding between 50% and 70% support in various surveys. His closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, is consistently identified as the primary challenger, with support around 31% in the same December polling.

The NPP flagbearership election is slated for January 31, 2025. This internal contest follows the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections by John Dramani Mahama and the NDC. Whom the party chooses to lead it into the 2028 elections will be decided this January.
