Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams limped off the field with seconds left on the clock after inexplicably being kept on the field during his team’s heavy loss to Arizona Cardinals.

With less than 30 seconds on the clock and Bears 20 points behind the Cardinals, Williams took a hit and crawled into space before rolling over holding the back of his left leg.

He then slowly climbed to his feet and limped off the field in deeply concerning scenes for the Bears and their rookie quarterback.

Quite why Bears coach Matt Eberflus had kept his quarterback on the field with the game gone for his team was unclear. But it could be a season-ending decision if Williams is badly hurt.

Sunday’s loss leaves the Bears 4-4 for the season and last in the NFC North.

Caleb Williams got hurt in the dying seconds of Chicago Bears vs Arizona Cardinals

‘I’m sorry, this just does not make sense to me,’ Charles Davis said on CBS as he called the game.

‘This is your rookie quarterback. I don’t think he should have been out there for the two minutes.’

Before Williams got hurt, Davis was questioning why the quarterback was on the field.

With two minutes left on the clock, he said: ‘I’m not sure how many lessons there are for him in this ballgame. I want that kid ready to go for next week.

‘I know he doesn’t want to come out. I don’t know that I would continue to have him in at this stage.’

Williams was sacked six times, completing 22 of 41 passes for 216 yards. The Bears had just 241 yards total.

Next week, the Bears host New England Patriots in Chicago. As for the Cardinals, Sunday’s win marks the first time in three seasons they have won three games in a row.
